There are so many reasons I love where I live. Growing up on this island was special. It’s no wonder people flock here from all over the world, to experience this magical place I get to call home. And every year, as summer starts to arrive, after a long hard winter, I’m reminded why I feel so lucky to be here. There is something about the ocean that makes me feel alive, a connection that runs deep, I know I’m not the only one that has that feeling. The saltiness in the air, that first swim of the season, the sensation of floating there, weightless, nothing else matters. Anytime I’m overwhelmed or stressed, I immediately go to the ocean, whether it’s the beach, the cliff walk, Fort Adams, the harbor, it doesn’t matter how bad I’m feeling or what the weather is like, I know I can find a sense of calm and peace.
The theme of today, World Ocean’s Day, is Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet and the goal is to take action to prevent plastic pollution in our ocean. We can all take steps to help keep our oceans healthy and prevent plastic pollution. The ocean connects us, it feeds us, and it is one of our most precious resources.
