What to Do (and Where to Stay) With Your Dog in Newport

Call me a crazy dog lady (quite frankly it would be 100% true, I am also a cat lady) but the one thing I miss more than anything when I go away are my animals. More and more I’ve noticed hotels and resorts are pet friendly and I’ve had several people reach out to me that are visiting Newport and want to know what to do with their dog while they’re here, so I wanted to share some of my favorite things we do with Nora in town.
A few weeks ago I had a little staycation with Nora, Julia and Boots at the Vanderbilt Grace. I had actually never been to the hotel so it was really cool to finally check it out. Upon arrival Nora had a cozy bed waiting for her and I kid you not she jumped in it the moment we got to the room.
The Vanderbilt staff was so great with Nora and Boots, and the two of them were completely spoiled for our entire stay. After a long walk, we took them to Yappy Hour which is pretty much the cutest thing ever, where Nora and Boots dined on a delicious meal of chicken and rice cooked by the chef while Julia and I got to relax on the patio. Scroll down to see some of my favorite places to see and things to do with your pup in Newport.
You can’t come to town without walking the Cliff Walk. And why not bring your pooch? The beginning of the Cliff Walk from First Beach to Ruggles can be crowded, especially in the summer, so do the second half and let your little buddy take a swim.
Dine dockside and grab breakfast at Belle’s Cafe in the Newport Shipyard. Not only are they dog friendly but you can dine outdoors with a gorgeous view and there is a little park and beach right next door before you go on the bridge to Goat Island.

Probably Nora’s favorite spot (and mine too) is Fort Adams. Plenty of space to run and frolic there’s beaches, fields, trails and plenty of other dogs to play with. Of course as with any of these spots, please be respectful of other people, leash your dog if they’re not friendly and pick up after them!
There are also lots of restaurants in town where you can sit outside with your dog including Diego’s, Perro Salado, The Pearl outside, Malt, Fifth Element, and Corner Cafe. There are leash laws on the island and the beaches are very strict about dogs in the summer so it’s almost not worth it to go there from Memorial Day to Labor Day because they do issue tickets and they’re $100. But there’s no shortage of gorgeous and fun places to go with your furry friend, and they’ll be so tired after a day of exploring you can leave them in a cozy bed of their own at the Vanderbilt Grace!

This is the most precious thing I’ve ever seen. I’m thinking of getting a dog soon and this would be too fun!

The best place to bring your dog for lunch is O’Brien’s Pub on Thames St. They have a doggie burger and a doggie chicken. It’s so wonderful and welcoming. You should check it out if you haven’t already.
I went to Newport 5 years ago and it is a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing dog friend places because that was one thing we missed on our trip – our dog!
