Master Bedroom Reveal

BEFORE

Man it feels like it’s been a long time coming for this one. What a difference a year makes. I wish I had taken photos before we painted the first time (the ceiling was brown) but you can see the room right when we bought the house in this video if you’re curious. Our master bedroom is a bit of a funky shape, it’s long and a little narrow. The house also only has two closets, one of them being in this room. I wanted our master bedroom to be light and bright, feel cozy, have minimal clutter and be easy to clean (three pets=a lot of hair). Our first matter of business was to whitewash the floors. It’s pretty incredible what a huge difference that makes not only in our bedroom but throughout the house. I won’t go into the entire process here, but Craig talks about how he did this in last week’s podcast episode. There’s also info on what we used to whitewash the floors in this post about our living room. Before we moved onto paint, Craig replaced all the trim to make the space feel a bit more updated and clean. In choosing a paint color we went with Farrow & Ball’s Peignoir. It’s a pink grey that has subtle hints of lilac depending on the light and time of day. It’s a soothing shade that is not your typical girly pink which is probably why Craig and I both love it (he actually suggested it first as we were looking for colors). Every time we paint we keep going back to Farrow & Ball. Not just for their colors (which we love and ended up picking out all F&B paint for the entire house) but because Farrow & Ball is completely low VOC and eco-friendly. Their paints don’t contain any plastic, acrylic, oil, or anything with potentially harmful off-gassing properties. Farrow & Ball is also a green company, so every time they manufacture something, they contribute to forest regrowth by funding the planting of trees. Probably something not many people are aware of when buying their paint since they don’t promote this a ton but I think it’s worth knowing. In terms of sheen we went with estate eggshell which has a 20% sheen level so it gives that nice subtle matte look you can achieve with Farrow & Ball paint (but still realistic for a house with pets).

Bed & Bedding

People constantly send me messages asking how I keep white bedding clean with two dogs and a black cat. Maybe I should do a blog post on this, haha. The truth is it’s actually easier with white (I think) but we also clean a lot. The dyson is a game changer. I change the sheets and bedding typically twice a week, vacuum regularly and use throw blankets that are easy to wash. I absolutely love our Boll & Branch duvet cover and sheets. They are soft, can withstand lots of washing and look great. For summer I have this Anthropologie throw on the bed as well. The Euro shams are from Rebecca Atwood (I also have one of her duvet covers that I love and alternate with the Boll & Branch). We went with a storage bed from Raymour & Flanigan since we don’t have a linen closet so we keep all of our towels and sheets there. Our French inspired headboard is a tufted linen that (luckily) does not attract pet hair. It’s also solid wood and incredibly well made. I love how it gives our bedroom an almost romantic feel. The picture above our bed is a photo Craig took that we had framed by Framebridge. One side of the bed has a bedside table (dresser on the other). The table is from Target and I was really impressed with the quality. I keep a chunk of amethyst in a little dish with a silk sleep mask (can’t live without it), my favorite candle and the Marie Kondo book.

Clothing Storage

Since we have limited closet space I have an additional garment rack where I keep seasonal clothes, hats, shoes, accessories, etc. When I posted a glimpse of this space I got a lot of questions about the hats, it’s truly so simple. I took tiny nails to avoid making huge holes in the wall, nailed them one at a time and slightly overlapped the hats, it’s pretty fool-proof. I love this garment rack from Urban Outfitters, it’s so sturdy, I actually bought another one for my office. It’s simple and easy to put together and for the price I think a really good find. If you’re looking for info on some of the hats and bags in the photo, I’ve linked it here. It took us forever to find bookshelves that would work in our bedroom. We have baseboard heating which makes putting anything up against the wall difficult. We found these wall-mounted bookshelves from CB2 and they were a bit of a splurge but worth every penny. I ended up buying three.

Dresser

We didn’t get these dressers until very recently because I just couldn’t find anything I liked that would also fit in the space we had. When I saw a photo on Rove Concepts of these Joren dressers pushed together I knew it would be perfect. It’s so much easier to keep our things organized each having our own dresser and I love the look of them together. Craig also doesn’t like furniture without legs because he thinks it makes the space feel crowded and harder to clean so this passed his standards test, haha. They’re also great quality and came packaged really well. I coveted this Anthropologie mirror forever and finally bought it as a birthday present to myself last year when Anthropologie was having a sale. It is by far one of my favorite things in the house. It makes such a statement in our bedroom. On top of the dresser I have these super affordable vanity trays from Target to organize my makeup and I always keep fresh flowers in this vase.

The Sunny Corner

I call this spot in our bedroom the sunny corner. The windows overlook the backyard and the sunlight that comes in throughout the morning and afternoon is so nice, usually you’ll find Hunter there at some point throughout the day. If you’ve been following this process you probably know that I tried to save money and get cheap curtains and curtain rods and ended up hating them. They just did nothing for the space. So I eventually bought these curtain rods and curtains from West Elm and I am so glad I did. The color is perfection and the lining is great because it blocks light really well in the morning. I bought this tripod floor lamp from Target and replaced the shade with this one from Anthropologie. The Velvet armchair is from Wayfair and the seat is deep which is what we needed for that corner. The Love Hamsa pillow is from Rebecca Atwood and the cable knit throw is Boll & Branch. The marble top side table is another Target find and I added this leather pouf to keep the chair company. The sheepskin is also from Wayfair.

    Hi,

Beautiful bedroom. Question, Was the headboard difficult to attach to the bed frame/bed? Thank you.

It’s actually not attached, its just leaning up against the wall and the bedframe is basically holiding it in place.

I love the space! I’ve been eyeing the Joren dresser for so long, and love how you styled it with that mirror. Quick question — did you mount the mirror or just rest it on the dresser? I’m guessing the mirror you used is 3′? Thanks!

Thank you! So in these photos it isn’t mounted, but we have since mounted it on the wall. And it’s the 3 foot size. Hope that helps!
