How To Do Preppy Style This Fall

While spring and summer fashion saw a lot of preppy influence, it hasn’t gone away for fall. The thing about preppy style is it’s very open to interpretation. There’s ivy league preppy style, southern preppy style, east coast preppy style, gossip girl preppy style…the list goes on. As someone who grew up in New England my personal style definitely has preppy influences and I think there are a lot of great preppy styles that would also be considered classics. At the same time, my years at Catholic school kind of much ruined khakis, polo shirts, and plaid skirts for me.

Here’s the thing about preppy style, you probably already have some of these pieces sitting in your wardrobe. Cable knit sweaters, button down shirts, and navy blazers are just a few of the very chic takes on preppy style. If you’re wondering how to do preppy style this fall or need some inspiration, today’s post is for you!

How To Do Preppy Style This Fall

What is preppy style? Well, it depends. Do you think of Ralph Lauren or Lily Pulitzer? Maybe Brooks Brothers or L.L. Bean. It’s open to interpretation, so I’m going to share some of my favorites and what I look forward to wearing this fall. With anything in fashion, you can make it your own, wear what you feel good in!

Preppy Clothes

Sweater Vests

I’ve mentioned sweater vests a few times because they are one of my favorite fall trends. They are actually perfect for Vermont weather right now too. Ideal for layering, especially for those days that start out chilly and end up really warm by the late afternoon. I love this sweater vest I got from Madewell. This cable knit style from Sézane is also so chic.

navy blazer

A navy blazer is a preppy staple but it’s also such a classic. Instantly pull together any outfit with a navy blazer whether it’s denim or a slip dress. The Michele Jacket from Sézane is a gorgeous double breasted navy blazer with gold buttons that has a slight menswear vibe but tailored enough that it doesn’t feel too big.

chic Stripes

I am a big fan of stripes, especially for sweaters and tees. The Newport tee from my ABLE collection is a nice option with a slightly oversized fit and henley button down neckline. The Saint James Meridame Breton striped shirt is another favorite. For sweaters you can’t go wrong with the Marin sweater in stripe from my ABLE collection (runs big!). Use code JAK15 for 15% off ABLE purchases.

button down shirt

When I think of preppy style I definitely think of a classic white button down. Whether you like something a little more oversized styled with a tailored trouser or tucked into straight leg jeans you can’t go wrong with this closet staple.

cable knit sweaters

You can’t go wrong with a cable knit sweater. I really like this style in a crew neck in either cotton or wool. ABLE has a cotton cable knit crew neck this season in brown (would look great under a navy blazer or camel coat. L.L. Bean’s soft heritage cable knit crew neck is made with organic cotton and the ivory is a classic.

Camel coat

A camel coat is one of those pieces you’ll have in your wardrobe for years to come. I have a few different styles because I wear them so often in the fall and winter. This tailored classic style from Boden is so chic and I love the oatmeal color. Summersalt’s eco wool cocoon coat is another great option.

Straight Leg Jeans

I’ve personally been gravitating to more straight leg styles with a clean hemline. My ripped denim styles have been collecting dust and I’m not ready to retire them yet, but I do like a more classic and tailored approach to denim at the moment. I got these straight leg jeans from CQY two winters ago and they are so comfortable. They wash really well and don’t get baggy with multiple wears.

Preppy Shoes

loafers

Loafers are a big trend for fall but most of them are a more chunky style that I personally don’t love. I’ve had this pair from Sam Edelman for years and honestly they’re hard to beat. They’re comfortable right out of the box and they look great with everything. Rothy’s also makes machine washable loafers made from recycled materials.

clogs

I don’t know if clogs qualify as preppy but they’re a big fall trend and I love them. I got this pair from M.Gemi and they are so comfortable. I love the platform heel and the backstrap too. If you’re looking for a flat style this shearling lined clog from my ABLE collection is really comfy.

Preppy Accessories

simple gold

Classic preppy style is all about simple gold (or silver jewelry). The heart necklace from my ABLE collection is a simple, delicate style that can also be monogrammed. A simple gold bangle like this one from Yearly Co looks so chic. The signet pinky ring from Mejuri is delicate and pretty. Speaking of delicate, the birthstone bracelet from Haverhill is another favorite that I wear everyday. Use code JAK15 for 15% off your purchase.

straw tote

A simple straw tote looks so chic whether you wear it with jeans and a tee or a dress and a blazer. I have been using this one from Sézane for everyday and I get so many compliments. For a more affordable option Etsy has tons of cute styles.

oversized scarf

Elevate any outfit and stay cozy with an oversized scarf. Even though it’s wool this oversized scarf from Acne is so soft. If you’re looking for cashmere, the White and Warren travel wrap is a great option.

Preppy Outfit Ideas

My approach to preppy style this fall is classics, tailoring, simple and easy. I want to be comfortable and my outfits need to be practical, hello toddler life. I like straight leg jeans with simple stripe tees and a navy blazer or trousers with a striped sweater and clogs. I’m all about less is more with preppy styles this fall.
