This week marked my first full week off of Instagram. I’ve taken breaks before, most recently being two weeks during the winter holidays. For some reason it feels different this time. Maybe because I know that I’m prepping to leave for good. Every single time I take a break from Instagram I find myself discovering new things about myself, and how the app impacts my own behavior. I’ve been jotting down thoughts that come to me so I can properly share when I’m ready, but one thing that has jumped out at me this week is how I react to tragedy.
When the shooting happened on July 4th in Chicago, my gut reaction was to share something about it on Instagram, and to see what other people were saying. Whoa. Why do I need people on Instagram to know how upset I am about this? I can assume most people who know me are very aware of my feelings on gun violence and gun reform. I’ve had plenty of in-person conversations about it. Most people know where I stand on abortion and a whole host of other political and social issues. But most people don’t see what I’m doing offline and how I engage civically and politically when I’m not on social media.
Conversations on social media about these issues are important, but they aren’t the endpoint. This week’s links include an article about how to become an activist outside of social media. There’s a lot of nuance in my own personal feelings about it, especially because I don’t think it’s an excuse for influencers and people with large platforms to have a “light and love and good vibes only” approach. But that’s the thing about social media, there’s not a lot of room for nuance.
More to come. Wishing you all a good weekend.
