After years of testing skincare products and makeup I recently started to explore clean beauty. My eyes were first opened to the unregulated beauty industry a few years ago. When you put products onto your skin, they go directly into your bloodstream, so it’s really important to be mindful of the ingredients in the products you use every day. I’ve been transitioning to a clean beauty routine ever since.
If you want to know what’s in the products you’re using, I highly recommend downloading Think Dirty. You can type the name or scan your products in your home to see their carcinogen, toxin & allergen levels.
I’ve tried my fair share of clean beauty products, so I rounded up 8 of my favorite brands that are completely safe and toxin free (part 2: clean makeup is coming soon!). We are always looking for new ones to try so let us know what you’re loving too.
Herbivore Botanicals
Possibly the most well known of clean beauty brands is Herbivore Botanicals. It can be found everywhere from big retailers like Urban Outfitters to small curated shops like Follain– and for good reason. All of their products are made from food-grade ingredients because after all, you shouldn’t put something on your skin that you wouldn’t put in your body. They also have therapeutic benefits as they are infused with botanical ingredients like rose, eucalyptus, and lavender.
The Coco Rose Body Polish is definitely a clean beauty cult favorite. It hydrates the skin with luxurious extra virgin coconut oil while it gently exfoliates away dead skin. After using it, use the remaining moisture to shave your legs instead of a shaving cream.
Vintner’s Daughter
This cult classic serum has received praise far and wide, by green beauty fans and big box beauty enthusiasts alike. Into the Gloss refers to it as “the face oil to end all face oils.” With 22 active botanicals, this serum works wonders on breakouts, inflammation, and dull skin. It’s also an effective replacement for harsh, chemically based anti-aging products since it brightens, soothes and repairs the skin. Said best by the makers themselves “it is a skincare game changer that restores skin’s balance, texture, and natural radiance.”
At $185 a bottle, it’s worth the splurge. I like to put it on before bed to wake up with clear, hydrated skin (no need to wash your face the morning after).
Scratch Goods
You can’t talk about clean beauty without touching on the subject of natural deodorant. In case you haven’t heard – there are aluminum compounds and other not–so–safe ingredients in most drugstore brands, so if you have been thinking about going green– start with your deodorant! After years of layering on antiperspirants, your armpits will need to do some detoxing, so beware: You might smell a little and need to try a few different brands until you find one that works for you.
After trying tons of natural deodorant brands, I was happy to find Scratch Goods in Chicago, who make a variety of affordable food-grade products. Their Tea Tree Under Arm Butter works like a dream and I’ve been using it since January, stink free! They also recommended that you mask your armpits to pull toxins out and make the transition a little smoother. Their Sea, Charcoal or Matcha masks are perfect for this and work wonders on the face and body as well.
Indie Lee
Indie Lee’s line of skin balancing, organic basics are perfect for all skin types and don’t break the bank. The brand uses the best globally sourced ingredients that are gentle and nourishing for everyday use. The products are designed to enhance your natural beauty without sacrificing your health or the planet. Indie Lee’s products are a great gateway to natural beauty if you are looking to transition your routine.
Some crowd favorites are the Brightening Cleanser, the Blemish Lotion (think Mario Badescu Drying Lotion’s safer cousin), hydrating serums and soothing bath soaks.
Pai Skincare
Pai Skincare is a British brand known for their non-toxic products, specially formulated for sensitive skin. Everything they make is “ultra-pure certified organic and loaded with skin-soothers and completely free from irritants.” Their products have gotten a lot of praise over the past year and have been seen on the red carpet and Into the Gloss, on the face of Emma Watson (swoon).
If you are new to natural beauty, Pai is a great place to start. Their products make the perfect base for your makeup routine and won’t leave holes in your wallet. Their 3 most loved products include a Regenerating Rosehip Oil, Hydrating Cleanser & Calming Day Cream.
French Girl Organics
Known for its Instagram-worthy products and packaging, French Girl Organics makes organic, “french-inspired” bathroom staples. FGO is 100% vegan and cruelty-free and favors botanicals over chemicals. On their site, you can find a myriad of scrubs, sea salt sprays, serums, and polishes– that almost all check out for under $50. Their Sea Polish is another top pick of Emma Watson’s– as her favorite exfoliant that leaves the skin moisturized.
A few things on my wish list is there Sea Soak, Bronzing Oil (great for a summer glow, sans sun!), and Rose Lip Polish.
Tata Harper
Perhaps one of the first natural beauty brands to go mainstream– Tata Harper has stolen the cabinet space of many with its effective luxury products. You can find TH at Sephora, in curated shops and in the beauty departments of retailers far & wide. Their products are 100% natural, organic & non-toxic and boast aroma therapeutic benefits. Formulated and manufactured in Vermont– Tata Harper does everything in house because they don’t believe in outsourcing quality.
One of my favorite products they make is the Resurfacing Mask. It does just that, removing dead skin gently with the beautiful smell of rose. It has also won beauty awards from Elle & InStyle and has a 5-star rating across the board.
Tammy Fender
Tammy Fender products are hydrating, nourishing and purifying. Made of all natural, top quality ingredients this brand is my go-to for skincare basics. If you are ever in Palm Beach, visiting her spa for a facial or treatment is a must (#goals). Here are my top 3 favorites of the moment:
Cleansing Milk: Wash your face without stripping your skin with this incredible cleansing milk. One of its main ingredients is Bulgarian Lavender which makes it gentle and healing for the skin.
Quintessential Serum: This stuff is the ultimate hydrating serum. Put it on before bed to wake up with amazingly radiant skin.
Epi-Peel: For days you need to exfoliate, this 5-minute mask is a game changer. It smells minty fresh and gives you an instant glow.
I’m really intrigued by Vintner’s Daughter serum! It has an expensive price tag, but I know that if there’s a good serum, those usually works!

Thanks for sharing! One of my favourite clean beauty brands is the Toronto-based ‘Wildcraft’.
These look like such great options. I’d love to try Vintner’s Daughter, but it’s just too much of a splurge for me right now. I have switched to a natural deodorant though, I love Schmidt’s!

I actually really liked Schmidt’s too! I need to get it again.
You didn’t mention Farmaesthetics!
