Our family does a neighborhood party on Christmas Eve… but not at just one house. We stop by each house and enjoy a different cocktail and appetizer then move on to the next. It is so fun because you get to see everyone’s tree and family… no one is overwhelmed by hosting… and everyone has a great time.

I have two favorite traditions. The day after Thanksgiving we get our Christmas tree and set it up that night. The other is the final 4 days before Christmas Eve we watch our favorite holiday movies: It’s a Wonderful Life, Holiday Inn, White Christmas and Scrooge. (all the other movies we watch when we have time, haha)

Christmas is the most magical time! In Sweden, where I grew up, we have a fun, nostalgic (and somewhat quirky!) tradition. Every year on Dec. 24 at precisely 3 pm, half of Sweden sits down in front of the television for a family viewing of the 1958 Walt Disney Presents Christmas special, “From All of Us to All of You.” Or as it is known in Sverige, Kalle Anka och hans vänner önskar God Jul: “Donald Duck and his friends wish you a Merry Christmas.” This happens without failure and we can all pretty much recite every line!

We almost always watch White Christmas on Christmas Eve, and have an “easy dinner” of hors d’oeuvres. And it’s not a tradition, but one Christmas morning when I was back from college, my family decided to spend all morning (after presents!) playing darts and drinking Bloody Marys. It was pretty fabulous, so I’m instituting it as a tradition when I buy a house of my own.

Keeping holiday traditions as a military family can be rather difficult. Three out of the last 4 Christmases have been abnormal due to moves or deployments. The one thing we try to do for every holiday (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc.) is have a big breakfast with cinnamon rolls, bacon and mimosas. That way, whatever the rest of the holiday brings we’ve had our little family time.

My Grandfather passed away Dec 22, 1995 and he had kept a secret that launched my two favourite Christmas traditions that we have continued with our four children. My Poppa LOVED the Holidays and took time to cook, eat, chat and drink coffee with each one of us. What we didn’t know is that every evening beginning Dec 1 he went to local senior homes to bake and cook with them, play his saxophone or piano. As a family we always go to senior homes on Christmas Eve to sing and spend time, but my Poppa believed that one night a year was not enough. My favourite traditions not only include spending time instead of dollars, but to remember those who may feel most lonely at this magical time of year. Blessings to each of you and prosperity in 2017

When my parents and I sit in the living room after opening presents and just do quiet things individually, like being on the computer, reading a book, or just watching a fire… then after a bit of time we get up and start preparing for the family to arrive. 🙂
