Play at the Playground or Park

Artistree

Artistree is a local non-profit that provides wonderful programming for the whole family. Located in Pomfret, Vermont it is a 5 minute drive out of the village. They have camps that run for different ages all summer long and weekly classes for ages baby to adult. They also have a beautiful playground that kids love! With a sandbox, slides, play structures and swings you can’t go wrong!

Vail Field

Vail Field is the go to park in town for a little bit of something for everyone. It is walkable from the town center and easily accessible. Their extensive play structure is great for all ages with monkey bars, slides, climbing structures and swings. The park also has a pavilion, big field for soccer and baseball, basketball court and tennis courts.

East End Park

East End Park is a beautiful park on the east end of town with a slide and some fun nature structures for climbing and exploring. There are also picnic tables to enjoy lunch or a snack and a beautiful walking trail along the Ottauquechee River.

Faulkner Park

Faulkner Park is a beautiful park that sits at the bottom of Mt. Tom. Owned and maintained by the Mary Faulkner trust, this park is a wonderful place to take a stroll or bike along the paved paths and enjoy the picnic tables under shady trees.

Go Swimming

Kedron Pond

The Kedron Pond is one of our favorite summer swim spots. It’s a small pond in South Woodstock, part of the Kedron Valley Inn and South Woodstock Store. The pond has some shady spots for spreading out blankets and picnics, a sandy beach, dock and roped off swim areas. There are tadpoles, frogs, turtles and crayfish at the pond that are fun for little ones to catch and play with.

Ottauquechee River

The Ottauquechee is a beautiful clean river that runs through our town. There are several different river access spots that make it easy to take a dip and enjoy the refreshingly cool, clean and crisp river water. Two great kid-friendly spots are behind the Woodstock Recreation Center (along the bank behind the Rec pool) and behind the history center in Woodstock. There is a little “sandy river beach” area behind the Rec that kids enjoy digging and playing in.

The pool at the Woodstock Recreation Center is a great place to take a dip during the summertime! There are often lessons and swim team practice, so be sure to check online or call to find out when the pool is open. There are two pools, lounge chairs, lockers, bathrooms with showers and changing rooms, kids games in the lobby and a concession stand for snacks.

Silver Lake

Silver Lake is in Barnard, Vermont about 15 minutes from the Woodstock Village. It is a beautiful state park with a pristine lake. You can access the lake through the State Park, where there are picnic tables, a playground, sandy beach, concession stand, bathrooms and boat rentals available. You can also access the lake for free across from the Barnard General Store. There is a grassy area for laying out towels and picnic tables for public use. Be sure to grab some ice cream and sandwiches from the general store!

Go For A Walk or Hike

Mt. Peg

Mt. Peg is a great quick and fairly easy hike for young hikers. It takes about 40 minutes to an hour to hike round-trip, depending on your pace. What I love about Mt. Peg is despite it’s short length, you still get a beautiful view at the top! There is a picnic table at the top to rest for a picnic and snacks.

East End Park

East End Park also has a lovely trail called the Ottauquechee River Trail that is flat and super kid-friendly! The park is on the east end of the village and the trail runs along the beautiful Ottauquechee River.

Grab a Bite to Eat

White Cottage

The White Cottage is a great place to eat with kids during the summer. We often meet up with several families and the kids all have a blast playing in the river and eating fries and ice cream. The White Cottage sits along the Ottauquechee River just outside of the village. The White Cottage is your classic summertime ice cream and fried food hub. Order your food and enjoy it in one of the swinging tables or down by the river on a picnic table. Kids love wading in the water and exploring the river.

For the cooler, rainier days or even those unbearably hot days, head to Ramunto’s in Bridgewater, Vermont. This family friendly pizza restaurant and bar has a game room and atmosphere perfect for all that wild kid energy!

Go to an Outdoor Concert

Feast and Field

Feast and Field in Barnard, Vermont is one of the most wonderful summertime outdoor concert experiences in the area. Every Thursday evening, enjoy beautiful vistas, diverse bands, yummy farm fresh food and local beverages. Bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy the energy, community and joy of this event. East End Park also hosts music on Friday evenings during the summer. Music by the River is hosted by Pentangle Arts and features an excellent lineup of bands. Pack your picnic and enjoy the beautiful, natural outdoor amphitheater and setting along the Ottauquechee River. Children will run and dance and play the evening away!
